You got into a car accident. Now what? While all accidents are different, there are a few basic must-dos that should happen after the crash. Take a deep breath, pull to the side of the road or a parking lot, if possible, and take a look at these three basic things to do after an auto accident.
- Assess the damage. First and foremost, is everyone okay? Check for personal injury and be sure the other parties are OK, too. (In case of injury, always call 9-1-1 and wait for medical help.) Then, if you are able to safely get out of the car, assess the physical damage to your vehicle and the other vehicle(s) involved.
- Take photos. Document the damage to your vehicle AND the other vehicle(s) involved for future reference. Whether you were at fault or the victim of the crash, these photos will be helpful for your insurance claim(s).
- Make necessary phone calls. Call the local authorities and have them meet at the scene to file an accident report, call your insurance company to let them know you have been in an accident, and then call us to set up an appointment to complete your repairs.
